Teaching Someone How to Fish > Repeatedly Watching a Videos of Fishing Techniques
I believe there is a functional difference between information and education.
We are relentlessly bombarded with information that is expected to put it to good use.
The human body is more complex than a car, and most people today wouldn’t know how to change a tire if it went flat on the highway despite the information necessary to do it being both in their glove box and in their pocket.
Education is delivering relevant information in a way that can be easily received and appropriately applied given the current context of a situation, AND it has to deliver meaningful results over time.
Why Aren’t More People Teaching Us How to Fish
In both fitness and medicine, the general belief is that most folks do not want education, they simply want to show up, be directed (workouts and prescriptions) and get back to their “real life”.
They believe most folks feel like fitness and medical intervention are separate from their real world, just “boxes to check”, a place to mindlessly walk a predetermined path, give someone else who knows better (trainer, coach, online program or medical professional) the power to magically “fix them” with workouts that get them sweaty or shots, pills, or a diagnosis to relieve them of their responsibility to improve their own quality of life
Learning to Fish
I believe there are a countless number of folks who want to take back control of their physical, mental and emotional health and are tired of being treated like a nameless, faceless number, gym member or patient
We haven’t yet found someone who will take the time to:
see us
listen to our stories
take into consideration all of our experiences and wants
take that information to mark a path from where we are (uncomfortable, confused, aimless) to where we want to go (feeling strong and capable enough to welcome navigate challenges or welcome newness in our daily lives)
help guide us, then walk beside us, then allow us to lead, then finally release us to explore new goals on our own
First, Why Do We Want to Fish?
For us to take any action consistently the results have to be worth it, and the action must be likely to lead to the result.
This is human nature. In order to decide something is worth it, we must understand why, and how.
Why is it important to be able to walk to the mailbox down the driveway when we are in our 90’s
How do we start working toward that when we are in our 30’s and 40’s so that we are sure we will continue to build and maintain strength, power, coordination, agility, and balance
Getting someone sweaty is the easy part, that’s why it’s not enough
A third grader could pull exercises out of a hat, then roll dice for the rep schemes, and people can get a good workout in for that day.
The value in education and ultimately autonomy has to go beyond good workouts to create sustainable results and resiliency.
Providing a mix of opportunities for folks to receive the information in a way that’s easy to understand and apply in our daily lives until this is new normal, feels familiar
The Guide, not the Guru
To be a full-time, professional who provides inspiring service, helping people who feel like they needed to get fitter “before” :
going on a hike
booking a vacation
joining a class
going for a bike ride in town
planning a hunting trip…
Making and following through on promises to people who have been nothing but devastated and disappointed in the past and are willing to “try one more thing” requires me to offer what hasn’t been offered before to address what hasn’t been addressed before
